The Minister President of the Land Baden-Württemberg in Germany.
Dear ladies and Gentlemen, dear visitors,
A visit to the Africa Festival in Tübingen is a must for friends of the African continent and African culture. For the seventh time, the African diaspora will be presenting itself with a promising program in Tübingen from July 21st to 24th, 2016, providing insights into their homeland and their lively and rich culture. This year the focus is on a very special country – the East African country of Burundi, with which Baden-Württemberg has.
I would like to thank the organizers of the Africa Festival Tübingen, the association AfrikAktiv e.V., for their decision to make Burundi the focus of this year’s festival, especially at this difficult time, and in doing so to create a platform to get to know this wonderful country and its lovely people better, and at the same time to draw attention to the problems on the ground. Along with many other activists, Baden-Wuerttemberg is involved in concrete projects in Burundi as part of development cooperation in order to alleviate hardship on the ground, create a basis for employment, and strengthen democratic structures. The State Ministry and the Burundi Competence Center of the Development Cooperation Foundation SEZ would be happy to present some of the projects to you at their information stand over a cup of Burundi coffee. I am sure that the festival guests will learn a lot of new things about Burundi and our partnership. The Burundi drummers, for example, will present a centerpiece of Burundian art and culture. This event offers you and all participants a great platform to present your skills and work and to talk about it with the visitors. This shared dialogue is an important prerequisite for getting to know and understand each other better and to overcome any fear of contact. This is especially true these days when many people are fleeing their homeland and seeking protection in our country and relying on our solidarity. And so I wish all guests of the 7th Africa Festival Tübingen that they can experience Africa with all their senses and immerse themselves completely in the fascinating culture of this country. I wish the organizers and all participants every success! maintained partnerships for over thirty years. A partnership that thrives admirably on the civic commitment of many partnership associations, parishes and private individuals. This was the only way to maintain the partnership ties over many years of military conflict in Burundi. After the very welcome resumption of official ties between our two governments in 2014, Burundi has been in a serious crisis again since last year. The news reaching us from Burundi fills us with concern. Many Burundian citizens are on the run and waiting until they can return to their home country. We must not and do not want to forget these people – this year’s AfrikaFestival is also dedicated to them.
