In 2020 the AU Special Envoy on WPS, inaugurated the Annual Forum on Women Peace and Security as a platform for policy dialogue, bringing women leaders from across Africa to reflect, on how women should be on the table on issues related to their security
“ We cannot continue to allow the men with the guns to continue to advance their war agenda to the disadvantage of women and girls” H. E Mme Bineta Diop, said in her opening speech this morning.
The Forum brought together high level panelist amongst others Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Former Chair of the African Union Commission. The 2 days high impact conference focused on elevating, monitoring and paving the way forward on womens participation in peace processes in their communities and countries, More than 200 women across countries in Africa attended and actively participated in the forum, sharing their experiences, learning from each other and taking part in the different panels and workshops.
Motivated by Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma’s quotes ” Where are the stories of the African women” it is evident that the percentage of womens voices is still very low and so the women emphasized on the need to reach out to more women was very essential.
The 4th High-Level Africa Forum on Women, Peace, and Security was held on December 13–14, 2023, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the theme “Enhancing Women’s Participation and Leadership in Peace and Security Processes in Africa.” This forum focused on strategies to amplify women’s involvement in peacebuilding, support networks for women in conflict-affected regions, and address contemporary issues such as climate change, displacement, and digital gender-based violence.
In the 5th edition, it was discussed that issues of women, peace and security must include the men as well so the need to have men involved was welcome under theme – HE for SHE.
We have come along way to be here and we can go far when we work together – Mme Bineta thanked the women and everyone who attended the forum and made it special.
The conference ended with good vibes wishing to meet again next year December 2025.
